A city of
south-central China west-northwest of Chongqing. Founded before 770 B.C., it is one of
China's oldest cities. Population, 1,590,000. Dujiangyan Dam
Is one of China's greatest engineering projects built 2,000 years ago, situated about
40 km (25mi.) northwest of Chengdu. Visitors are taken to an exhibition room in the
Dujiang Dam Pavilion to watrch a film tracing the history of the irrigation network.
Thatched Cottage of Du Fu
It was the former residence of the famous TangDynasty poet Du Fu. The spot is
marked by a small stream. A painting exhibition inside the shrine attempts to evoke the
poet's moods. Many contemporary figures, including Mao Zedong, have writeen couplets in
praise of Du Fu.
Marquis Wu Shrine
It was built by Li Xiong of the Western Jin Dynasty(about 1,100 years ago) in memory
of Zhuge Liang, prime minister of Shu Kingdom of the Three Kingdoms Period(220-80AD).
Panda City
Located in northern suburban Chengdu, the Panda City covers an area of 600,000 square
meters. It is the home of 20 pandas.
