A city of northeast
China north of Jilin. It grew after Russia was granted a trade concession in 1896 and the
completion of the railroad to Port Arthur (now Lüshun) in 1898. The city is the capital
of Heilongjiang province. Population, 2,630,000. Every year from
early January to late February Harbin hosts a spectacular Ice and Snow Festival. The
festival is mainly located in Zhaolin Park, which is filled with remarkable sculptures
carved from ice. These can range from intricate carvings of human figures, birds, animals
and mythical beasts to huge reproductions of famous buildings.
